But basically, they need to sort out the NHS lower down. A and E services are stretched partly because GP services are so dire- you can never get an appointment, they don't work evenings, weekends, bank holidays , don't do after hours or house calls plus they get paid a fortune, no wonder so many people go to A and E who don't need to be there.

Agreed we need to be clear what will be dealt with at Lewisham now.

Re: GPs, the average non-partnered salary is appropriate I think, given their training and responsibility:
Salaried GPs employed directly by PCTs earn between £53,781 to £81,158, dependent on, among other factors, length of service and experience. (from NHS jobs website)

Wells Park practice do evenings and alternate Saturdays. You can usually get an on the day appt and can book in advance online. Seldoc covers GP out of hours services.

The maternity services at Lewisham are also going to be of concern. Need intervention during labour? Of you go to Kings or Woolwich in an ambulance!

why do so many people go to A and E who could be easily dealt with by a GP? (maybe because its an evening/weekend/bank holiday and the GP is closed, or they didn't phone on the dot of 8 a.m.and couldn't get an appointment?)
