.. or are they converting themselves into a 'one-stop' funeral/pound-shop/nail-bar/charity shop/crappy grocery store that nobody wants so they can close down only to re-open as a pawn brokers specialising in Gold and poor quality fast food?

Yeas, but the coffee in Kente leaves a lot to be desired for my taste. Blue Mountain for coffee and the most delicious croissants.

I agree a matter of taste. I like the coffee in Kente but appreciate maybe not to all tastes.

I hope it opens again soon, we like the Blue Mountain Cafe, along with Sugahill and Kente it's a good cafe. I hope it's upping it's game to compete with some of the excellent cafe's in Forest Hill that have opened recently.

I like all of the Sydenham coffee shops, but I hardly ever go. I suppose that's because on the rare occasions I visit the high street, my overriding priority is to leave as quickly as possible, rather than linger over a coffee. Whereas I often wander into Forest Hill, browse through the shops and have a coffee and something to eat.

The difference is a tad depressing, actually.

I've just walked past there and it looks like they're doing a refurb of some kind. Didn't look to closely though, and there's no word of the Sydenham branch on their website.

I usually keep an eye on "Scores on the Doors" to see how Syd Road eateries and food outlets are rated. Blue Mountain was graded as only one star out of a possible five, report date 17 Oct 2011. I wonder does anyone know if the lease is still going or is up for renewal?

That is a very low rating. Maybe they have been closed down.

I have two main objections to the establishments. They have no back support on their benches. What is wrong with chairs.

I called in about 3 years ago on a Sunday morning. I was the only customer but there was crap music playing loud for the benefit of the staff. I asked if they could kindly turn the volume down which they did but you could tell by their looks they were not happy.
Maybe I am simple but I though business were run for the clients not the staff.

A year ago I was in charge of an eating establishment, I was the one who upheld the cleanliness,good food hygeine and all the records that go with it, I acheived 5 stars each visit I had over that period from the EHO, That record stands for 3 years, the last 5 Stars I got was in 2010, I left in 2011,so there are about 2 years left on my achievement, the person who has taken over my role may or may not be as efficient as me,so what does that say about the system?

There is a sign on the door wishing all their customers a merry Xmas and New Year and informing their customers that they will be closed until January 3rd

Kente is fine but yes, coffee not the best. George is a delightful gentleman, however.

My favorite is SugaHill. Yasmine is an absolute treasure. Free wifi and good music. A brilliant cafe.

As I understand it, inspections generally are less frequent than one might hope, especially if a rating that isn't exactly ace is given, though I gather workload of inspecting staff figures a lot. However, for some eateries/outlets, I have noted that although a right of reply facility exists, some seem not to bother so the bad rating stands unquestioned. Far be it from me to know why an eaterie/outlet doesn't "clean up its act" and try to set the record straight (i.e. get a revised upgrading). Regrettably I don't know enough about how it works, but having on public view for "ages" a very low rating makes one wonder since I'm sure both you (or I if I ran one) would be on the case like pronto to get whatever it is sorted. Perhaps "right of replies" aren't posted promptly, though again,'twere it me, I'd be want to know why. Perhaps some are happy with a "Moderate" middling grade - dunno.

It shocks me when I see a "one star" rating, If it were 3-4 I would still eat in the establishment, as normally it is the "bookwork" that is not up to scratch, having said that this may include daily records of fridge/freezer temperatures,which is a legal requirement.

I agree Anne, but I assume when they reopen they will take more care of the hygeine side and less of the crap music.

I haven't been to Blue Mountain for donkeys but like it as a place and will definitely re-visit when it opens again. I last went there when my Dad visited and he was very impressed with the quality of the full English and the coffee. I always found the decor very relaxed and inviting too.

I think we need to keep supporting such establishments, and Juliet, you really should take advantage of what's on your door step. We still have nice cafe's, a decent butchers and fishmongers, and excellent green grocers and a good book shop, which is more than Forest Hill.
