Mega Oyster Confusion

Post by girl_canuck »

Hi everyone! We just moved to Sydenham this weekend - hurrah! Loving it so far. BUT - we both have to go to work tomorrow morning, and the whole Oyster thing is really confusing me!

I need a zone 1-4 (going from Penge East to Brixton to Oxford Circus), and my husband needs a zone 3-5 (going from Sydenham station to East Croydon).

The ticket office at Sydenham station was closed when we went just now. We both have Oyster cards, which I'm assuming is what we'll need(??) But I can't seem to buy the travelcards online, because the Oyster site requires us to touch in at a tube station to activate them.

Can we use Oyster cards on the train? Can we go to a corner shop to buy the travelcard? Or do they only do renewals? How do you buy a travelcard if you don't actually travel through a tube station to activate it?

I'm SO CONFUSED.

Thanks!!!

I'm so glad it's not just me that's confused! I've been here since Jan and am still confused (ok maybe I'm one sandwich short etc) but as I understand it, you can't use prepay Oyster cards on the trains to or from Sydenham. You can use season tickets but not prepay.

Daily travelcards, which is what I need to use once or twice a week are equally muddly. Now I may be getting this wrong because I just can't retain the info as it's so illogical.. but I think... you can get zones 1-3 during the rush-hour but off peak you have to get zones 1-4. ! Not sure about zones that don't include 1. Not enough room in my brain for that one! My advice.... take a pen and paper on a day when you're feeling clever and ask any of the staff ..except the one who never smiles. Then go and get a coffee at Blue Mountain or Sugarhill to calm your nerves!

Regarding the man who never smiles.. I urge you to try and make him .. it's a good game. And a challenge I've yet to win.

All the best.. if you do find out.. let us know..

Welcome to Sydenham!

You are quite right. You can only use Oyster travelcards on Southern, and they do have to be activated at a tube station, you're quite right... so, you'll probably need to get a one day travelcard tomorrow or a single into town.
I havent found any other way...

You may be aware, but the 176 goes to Oxfrd Circus also - it does take forever tho
